YOTA New Zealand’s social presence started on the 3rd of June 2019, when it became apparent there was a number of young hams in New Zealand who wanted to play radio but just didn’t know of any other hams their own age. According to the IARU, the definition of a ‘young ham’ is persons 26 years old and under. Using this definition, we have amassed more than twenty members under the age of 26, and around another 30 members between 26-65 who are supporting us in our venture as “youngsters” and our membership is growing weekly.

In early 2020 the core management of YOTA here in New Zealand is planning on having a youth camp. This will be situated in Wellington and will be run the weekend coinciding with the Jock White Field day the 27th Feb – 28th Feb. We will be using the Gisborne branches number 11 for this event so look out for us!

At the time of writing this, we are currently at the start of December, and Youth Month is in full swing. So if you hear ZL6YOTA on the air (all modes and bands) please come help us promote Youth in Ham Radio, and get your call into out logbook! 🙂
